Alcohol plays a role in 40 per cent of all boating accidents in Quebec, a statistic provincial police are trying to reduce through a new information campaign.

The "En bateau, c'estalcoolzro"campaign reminds boaters that the effects of alcohol are intensified by summer conditions including sun, wind and waves.

According to the Lifesaving Society of Quebec, having one beer on the water is similar in effect tothree on solid ground.

The Sret du Qubec will be making its presence felt on lakes and rivers around the province during the vacation period to promote awareness and ensure boaters are respecting the law.

While it is legal to carry open alcohol on boats in Quebec, it is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol.

Having a blood alcohol level of more than 0.08 percentcan result in a minimum fineof $1,000 and land you in jail.

In 2015, 300 SQ water patrol officershanded out 800 tickets and issued 3,000 warnings.

The campaign also seeks to remind boaters of basic safety on the water by ensuring boats are equipped with life vests, a whistle, a flashlight, a floating safety rope and fire extinguisher.
