A Quebec City man has been charged with the first-degree murder of a woman he met in an internet chat room in 2003.

Lyne Massicotte of Chambly, Que., disappeared after travelling to Quebec City to meet Alain Perrault on July 17, 2003.

Ababysitter who was caring for Massicotte's two children that night contacted police when she didn't return home.

"Three days later, we found her car, which was a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire, in Old Quebec," said Quebec City Police Const. Sandra Dion.

Her body was never found, police said.

Perrault, 47, had been considered the main suspect, but was never charged until now. New evidence led investigators to him on Tuesday, Dion said.

"Even without a body, there have been past convictions for first-degree murder," Dion said.

Perrault is expected back in court on Feb. 22.
