Polytechnique shooting: Commemorations in Montreal, across Quebec

On the 25th anniversary of the tragic Polytechnique shooting that left 14 women dead, special events will take place in Montreal, across the province and even across Canada to commemorate Dec. 6, 1989.

Here is a list of events taking place:

In Montreal:

Place du 6-dcembre-1989 (Decelles Ave, near Chemin de la Cte-des-Neiges)

- 11 a.m.:Gathering organized by the ASS womens committee. Calling on the student community to come out, the group will meet at the commemorative plaque on the Universit de Montreal campus.

-1 p.m.: Polytechnique officials and student association representatives from 1989 and from 2014 will lay 3 bouquets of 14 white roses. The ceremony will take place at the commemorative plaque located on the west faade of the main building of Polytechnqiue.

- 2 p.m.: Commemorative silent gathering (organized by the Committte of 12 days of Action for the Elimination of Violence against Women)

- 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Commemorative gathering with survivors of the shooting together with families of the victims. People who gatherfor the silent vigil will march through the Cte-des-Neiges cemetery to stop at the chalet on Mont Royal. There, activists and politicians including Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard are expected to speak. The Verduns Womens Centre will also join this march, handing out white ribbons and white candles to its members. It is also asking women to light a candle in their windows at nightfall.

7:30 p.m.: LOrchestre de lUniversit de Montral will perform a Brahms and Bach concert to commemorate the anniversary at Salle Claude-Champagne in Outremont. Tickets for En souvenir delles are $15. Students can attend for free.

8 p.m.: Fourteen singers will take to the stage at ThtreOutremont. They will perform one song in honour of each victim killed in the shooting. (Organized by Juripop and La Coalition pour le contrle des armes)

InGatineau:

12 p.m.: A vigil in ParcMmoire dElles, corner Grber and jacques-Cartier

In Quebec City:

12:45 p.m. Gathering in Place Laurier (organzied by Comit Ensemble contre la violence faite aux femmes)

InVictoriaville:

3:30 p.m: The feminist committee of the Maison des femmes des Bois-Francs invites people to attend a theatre presentation in front of the CEGEP.

InChibougamau:

7 p.m.: Screening of the film Polytechnique at the maison dhbergement lAquarelle

InJonquire:

7:30 p.m.: Dinner and performance by singer Philippe Berghella at CGEP Jonquire. Before the show, readings will take place and white ribbons will be distributed.

Shine the light

Two Montreal landmarks will follow the lead of the Womens Y and be illuminated in colour as a way to mark the anniversary.

All day on Saturday, Montreal City Hall will be lit purple as a way to honour the victims who died in the Montreal Massacre 25 years ago.

The tower of the Olympic Stadium will have red lights from sunset to sunrise.

Major monuments across the country will also be illuminated in either red, pink or purple lighting. Shine the Light is an initiative of the Ottawa-based Coalition to End Violence Against Women.
