STM to introduce another round of fare increases July 1

The cost of an ordinary monthly pass will go from $82 to $83. Here's a full breakdown of the price hikes, which go into effect July 1.

Fares will rise by 25 cents to a $1 in certain cases

Fares for Montreal's public transit system remain "some of the lowest in North America," said STM chair, Philippe Schnobb. (Charles Contant/CBC)

Public transit users in Montreal will have to pay slightly more to use the city's system starting July 1.

Fares will rise by 25 cents to $1 in most cases, with the cost of an ordinary monthly pass going from $82 to $83 and reduced-rate monthly passes going from $49.25 to $49.75.

The greatest increase will affect the four-month reduced-rate pass, which will rise from $189 to $197.

Ticket rates for one ride, two rides, one-day, three-day and unlimited evening passes will stay the same.

In a statement, STM chair Philippe Schnobb said the new rates are the lowest increases since 1998, and the cost of public transit in Montreal remains "among the lowest in North America."

The STM had frozen its rates in January, saying it wanted to give users a six-month break.
