The Montreal SPCAwants the town of Bromont to withdraw a new municipal bylaw that bans residents from adopting or buying pit bull dogs.

Bromont joined about other 50 other municipalities in Quebec which don't allow the breed. Councillorsvoted unanimously to ban the dogs and the bylaw came into effect on Jan.15.

The SPCA wrote on its Facebook page that breed-specific legislation is discriminatory.

"Itdiscriminates against responsible dog guardians, and well-behaved dogs simply because of the dog's appearance," wrote the SPCA.

Under Bromont's new bylaw, people who own pit bulls will be able to keep them, but new pit bulls won't be allowed to be registered with the municipality.

A petition against the ban has gathered over 1,700 signatures.
