Mercier Bridge protest targets Montreal sewage dump

Around 40 people, some carrying a banner reading "Save Our River," gathered at the foot of the Montreal-area Mercier Bridge to protest the dumping of eight billion litres of untreated wastewater into the St. Lawrence River.

Around 40 people, somecarrying a banner reading "Save Our River," gathered at the footof theMontreal-areaMercier Bridge to protest the dumping of eight billion litres of untreated wastewaterinto the St. Lawrence River.

The City of Montreal is to begin the release of raw sewagearound midnight after the controversial plan receivedthe go-ahead from Environment Canada.

Protesters saidthey hoped to stop the dump if possible.

Reports said protesters were blockading Route 132 in the direction of the Mercier Bridge. (Radio-Canada)
