Montreal sewage dump: Kahnawake protesters block Mercier Bridge

Kahnawake Mohawks blocked an access ramp to the Mercier Bridge for the second night in a row to protest the City of Montreal's controversial sewage dump into the St. Lawrence River.

Montreal's plan to divert 8 billion litres of untreated wastewater into the river started Wednesday morning just aftermidnight.

The project will continue for a week after Mayor Denis Coderresaid the city met conditions issued by Environment Canada.

Kahnawake Peacekeepers monitored the demonstration attended by a few dozen people. Access to the bridge by Highway 138 was blocked until 4 a.m. Thursday.

Carrying a banner marked "Save our River", it was the second protest that day.

Students from Kahnawake Survival School held a walkout to protest the sewage dump around noon on Wednesday.
