Montreal to get 3 more pedestrian streets this summer

Montreal will make sections of three streets more pedestrian-friendly during this year's warm months as it continues to expand its roster of streets where vehicular traffic is banned in the summer.

The city announced Friday that it will turn three streets into pedestrian walkways or shared roads:

• GilfordStreet, betweenSaint-Denis andRivardstreets in thePlateau-Mont-Royal.
• Decelles Street, between Dcarieand Sainte-Croix streets in theSaint-Laurent borough.
• Place Masson, between 5thand 6th avenues in Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie.

Thatsection of GilfordStreet near Laurier Metro station will be closed to all vehicular traffic this summer.

The city will overhaul the other two streets to prioritize pedestrians and limit access to cars.

Saint-Laurent borough mayorAlan DeSousais excited about the possibilities the new pedestrian-friendly street in his borough will offer.

"I think it's a great opportunity to work with the community, with Vanier College, with the merchants, with the residents to see how we can best do it,"DeSousasaid.

With the new additions, the city will now have a total of 56 pedestrian-only streets that are temporary, seasonal or permanent.

This is the fourth year in a row that the city has offered financing for new pedestrian-only projects.
