Montreal Biodome anxiously awaiting arrival of baby sloth

A six-year-old sloth, who became a favourite at Montreal's Biodomeduring her rehabilitationfrom a broken leg suffered as a youngster, is now an expectant mother.

The sloth underwent an ultrasound this week, a video of which was released on YouTube.

She is one of four female sloths at the Biodome and she herself was born in the facility.

The Biodome does not name its animals, but this particular slothbecame well-known to the staff after she, at eight-months-old, fell and broke her femur inside theTropicalRainforestenvironment. She underwent surgery at theUniversitdeMontralFaculty of Veterinary Medicine and had metal rods inserted in her leg to stabilize the bone.

She recovered at theBiodome's veterinary clinic and rejoined the other sloths after 10 months of rehabilitation.

Since 2002, eight sloths have been born at the Biodome. Fiveof them have been transferred to other zoos.

Fewtwo-toed sloths births have been documented, according to the Biodome, but the gestation period is around 11 months.

The Biodome expects the newest sloth to arrive this fall.
