Laval overpass reopens 8 months after deadly collapse

Transport Quebec has reopened the Concorde overpass in Laval, almost nine months after part of the old structure collapsed, killing five people.

The overpass on Highway 19 north of Montreal, whichwas officially reopened late Wednesday afternoon,is now made up of concrete blocks supported by steel beams and a central weight-bearing column.

The former structure was completely demolishedafter part of the overpass broke off and crashed down on the road below, crushing several cars and killing five people, including a pregnant woman.

Former Quebec premier Pierre Marc Johnson is leading an inquiry into the Sept. 30 overpass collapse. The inquiry's hearings are due to resume in late June.
