Officials declare second measles case in past few days in Laval

Health officials say two people who were contagious with the virus visited a number of public locations onJune 26 and 29.

Public health officials release expanded list of potential exposure sites

People at risk include babies, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women who haven't received all their measles vaccines. (CBC)

Provincial health authorities have declared a second case of measles in recent days in Laval and expanded a list of locations in the cityat which people may have been exposed to the virus in late June.

Health authorities say threepeople infected with the virus travelled on several Socit de transport de Laval (STL) buses and visited a gym and a number of commercial areas, includingCarrefour Laval, on Wednesday, June 26 and Saturday June 29. Those people arebelieved to have been contagious at the time.

The June 26 locations and approximate times include:

  • Restaurant L'Oeufrier at1702boulevard des Laurentidesbetween 7 and 8:40 a.m.
  • STL bus 70, which departed Montmorency Metro toward Cartier Metro at 11:07 a.m., between 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
  • STL bus 20 which departed Cartier MetrotowardNotre-Dame/Montgolfier at 12:22 p.m. and then departedNotre-Dame/Montgolfier for the reverse journey at 12:55 p.m., between 12:15 and 1 p.m.
  • Club de gymnastique Laval Excellence, 1555 Saint-Martin Boulevard East, between noon and 4:30 p.m.
  • STL bus 70 which departed Cartier MetrotowardMontmorency Metro at 3:18 p.m., between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Dollarama, 2077 Boulevard des Laurentides, between 4:50 and 6:20 p.m.
  • Carrefour Laval's common areas near theCorridor 2 entrance, as well as Second Cup, between 4:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

On June 29, they visitedPharmacie Proxim at 5020 Boulevard des Laurentidessometime between 10:30 and 11:45 a.m.

Quebec health authorities say those at risk of complications should be evaluated to receive a preventive vaccine.

Those at risk include babies less than a year old, those with a weakened immune system and women who are pregnant and have not received the vaccine.

Those who aren't at risk of complications don't need to take any immediate action, health authorities say.

Authorities are asking anyone who thinks they're at risk to call Info-Sant. Symptoms may start appearing as late as July 25.

Preventive treatments for those exposed on June 26 should be received no later than July 3, and no later than July 6 for those exposed on June 29.

People who work in the areas of the mall are already receiving preventive treatments.

A previous measles warning in the area was issued less than a month ago.
