Montreal weather: Icy storm causes slick conditions

Many parts of Quebec and eastern Ontario got hit with a powerful mix of snow and freezing rain Tuesday, closing a number of schools and delaying many flights.

Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for Tuesday in southern, central and eastern Quebec, as well aseastern Ontario.

"The hardest-hit regions will be along and north of the St.Lawrence Valley where an accumulation of 10 to 20 millimetres of freezing rain can be expected. Elsewhere fromtwo to fivemillimetres are forecast," Environment Canada's weather warning read.

"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and extremely hazardous."

As of 4:30 p.m. ET, that warning remained in effect.

In some parts of eastern Ontario, including Ottawa, more than 35centimetresof snow fell.

In Montreal, thesnowturned to freezing rain this morning. It changed to rain in the afternoon as the temperature creptabove 0 C.

Transit delays, power outages in Montreal

Montreal's publictransit authority tweeted to say bus commuters should expect delays.

Around 12,000 Hydro-Qubec customers in the Montreal boroughs of Villeray-St-Michel-Parc-Extension,Rosemont-Petite-Patrieand St-Lonardwere without power early Tuesday morningdue to a seriesofequipment failures.

By 4:30 p.m. ET, all but 135 customers in the greater Montreal region had had their power restored.Across Quebec,about 4,000 Hydro-Qubec clients remained without power.

Check travel plans

Bymid-afternoon, Montreal's Trudeau airport was reporting a significant number of flight delays. Several flights to Toronto's Billy Bishop airport had also been cancelled. as well as some flights to Ottawa, New York andNewark.

Montreal police reported no major incidents on city streets, but they cautioned drivers to remain vigilant on their commute home.
