COVID-19 in Quebec: What you need to know Wednesday

Premier Franois Legault unveiled details of the province's stricter lockdown. He is imposing a curfew, starting Saturday, which would be a first in Quebec since the start of the pandemic.

  • Quebec reported 2,641new caseson Wednesday and 47 more deaths, 13of which occurred in the past 24 hours.
  • Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 217,999confirmed cases and 8,488 people have died. Here's aguide to the numbers.

The Quebecgovernment has unveiled the details of stricter lockdownmeasures coming into effect Saturday in an effort to contain the soaring number of COVID-19 cases.

Premier Franois Legaultannounced a curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Grocery stores and depanneurs will have to close at 7:30 p.m. Fines for breaking curfew will range from $1,000 to $6,000.

The province also announced a more detailed schedule for vaccinations.

Meanwhile, residents at the Maimonides Geriatric Centre in Cte Saint-Luc have launched legal action against the province, demanding they receive their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine within 72 hours.

They say the government's decision to delay their second shots in order to provide a first dose to as many people as possible is a breach of contract.

Quebec government reminders for preventing the spread of COVID-19:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Wear a mask or face coveringwhen physical distancing is not possible. Wearing a mask is mandatory in enclosed public spaces across the province.
  • Stay at least two metres away from other people as much as possible.
  • Self-isolate for 14 days after returning from a stay outside the country.
