COVID-19 in Quebec: What you need to know this weekend

The COVID-19 death toll in Quebec reached 10,031 Sunday, which accounts for about half of the total number of deaths in Canada.

  • Quebec reported 1,081new caseson Sunday and 32more deaths.
  • Since the start of the pandemic, there have been270,058 confirmed cases and 10,031 people have died.
  • There are 963 people in hospital (a decreaseof 19), including 158 in intensive care (adecrease of one).
  • 2,033doses ofvaccine were administered Saturday. A total of 256,550doses have been administered since Dec. 14, accounting for threeper cent of the population.

The death toll reached 10,031 Sunday, which accounts for about half of the total number of deaths in Canada.

In a tweet, Health Minister Christian Dub didn't mention the milestone. He said while numbers in the last two weeks have been encouraging, there are still too many deaths.

On Friday, COVID-19 hospitalizations dropped below 1,000 for the first time since Dec. 25 , and provincialdata for soon-to-be orange zones hasshown consistently low numbers over the past week, ahead of a gradual reopening that will start across the province Monday.

None of the six orange regions the Gasp and the Magdalen Islands, the Lower Saint Lawrence, SaguenayLac-Saint-Jean, Abitibi, the North Shore, and Northern Quebec have surpassed five new cases a day all week.

In red zones, businesses, museums and hair salons will be allowed to open, but the curfew will remain in place.In orange zones, restaurants and theatres have been given the go-ahead, but with some restrictions still in place, and the curfew is being pushed back to 9:30 p.m.

Quebec government reminders for preventing the spread of COVID-19:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Wear a mask or face coveringwhen physical distancing is not possible. Wearing a mask is mandatory in enclosed public spaces across the province.
  • Stay at least two metres away from other people as much as possible.
  • Self-isolate for 14 days after returning from a stay outside the country.
