COVID-19 in Quebec: What you need to know Tuesday

As Canada's COVID-19 death toll surpassed 15,000, the number of new cases and hospitalizations continued to rise in Quebec.

  • Quebec reported 2,381 new casesonTuesday and 64new deaths, 17of which occurred in the last 24 hours.
  • Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 197,311confirmed cases and 8,124people have died.Here's aguide to the numbers.
  • There are 1,131 people in hospital (an increase ofseven) including 148in intensive care (a decrease of two).

The first known Quebecer has been infected with the new coronavirus variant after coming into contact with a family member who had recently returned from the United Kingdom.

A statement from Quebec's Health Ministry says the family member had close contacts with three members of their immediate family after returning home on Dec. 11, more than a week before flights from the UK had been halted.

They tested positive on Dec. 13, and all three family members have since tested positive as well.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

  • Fever.
  • New or worsening cough.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Sudden loss of smell without a stuffy nose.
  • Gastrointestinal issues (such as nausea, diarrhea).

Quebec government reminders for preventing the spread of COVID-19:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Wear a mask or face coveringwhen physical distancing is not possible. Wearing a mask is mandatory in enclosed public spaces across the province.
  • Stay at least two metres away from other people as much as possible.
  • Self-isolate for 14 days after returning from a stay outside the country.
