Cartierville tenants left in the cold for weeks

Housing advocates say tenants living in a multi-storey apartment building on Ranger Street are struggling to stay warm after weeks without heat.

Housing advocates say tenants living in a multi-storey apartment building on Ranger Street are struggling to stay warm after weeks without heat.

Patrice Sansregret, a community organizer with tenants rights groupCLAC,said he learned about the problem after receiving calls from tenants in the building.

"It's the same story over and over again," he said."It's like people are living in a third world country."

The building at 11815 Ranger Streethas had problems with its heating system in the past.

The buildingchanged owners on Jan. 1.

The new owner, who wason site Thursday afternoonwith firefighters and housing activists,saidthey were made aware of the heating issue just yesterday.

Landlord Man Sun Yeungsaidhe hired technicians to fix the boiler system, and heating began to be restored Thursday evening. He also said the 16-unit building will undergo an inspection on Friday.

Firefighterscontactedthe Red Cross to assess the situation and meet with the families.
