Montreal's Bixi season comes to an end

It's still warm enough for cycling, but the bike-sharing season officially comes to an end at midnight. Here's why.

It's the last day of the year to hop on a Bixi.

The season officially comes to an end at midnight Tuesday, even though temperatures will be above average for most of the week.

Brengre Thriault, a spokeswoman for the city's bike-sharing service, said removing the stations takes a few weeks.

In the past, Bixihas had to scramble to remove the stations after an early snowfall.

"A lot of our stations are on the street, so it's important for people to [be able] to remove the snow," Thriault said.

Bixi announced in October thatit's expanding next year, with 1,000 more bikes and 80 more docking stations.

The company saidits popularity has been steadily growing since it filed for bankruptcy and restructured two years ago.

The average number of daily trips climbed in 2016 to21,000, compared to 16,000 in 2014.
