Winnipeg woman killed in North End

A shooting in Winnipeg's North End has claimed the life of a young woman, police say.

An early morningshooting in Winnipeg's North End has claimed the life of a young woman, police said Sunday.

Officers and paramedics were called at about 4:20 a.m. CT to the 600 block of Selkirk Avenue, where they founda 21-year-old woman who had been shot.

She wastaken to hospital in critical condition and died there.

Police didn't identify the woman or say if she was shot inside a home or on the street. However, forensic identification officers were seen searching the upstairs of a two-storeyhome at689 Selkirk.

Officers at the scene at 8:30 a.m. were focusing onpart of aback lane outside what appeared to be an abandoned house. The block of Selkirk between Parr Street and McKenzie Street was closed to traffic.

No other information was immediately available and no arrests have been made.

"This investigation is in its very early stage," Const. Natalie Aitken said in a statement.

Aitken is asking anyone with information to call homicide investigators at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Fatal attack in same area

Amonth ago Sunday, Gerald Dumas, 47,was attacked and set on fire in a back lanenot far from where the shooting took place.

Dumas suffered extreme burns to his body and died in hospital Sept. 27. Police have said Dumas was attacked in the 500 block of Selkirkand set alight with an undisclosed liquid hisassailant found on him.

Gaston Leroy Genaille, 19, is charged with second-degree murder. Genaille remains in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
