Winnipeg veteran recalls D-Day landing scene

June 6, 1944, is a day Winnipegger Robert Bruce never wants to relive but can never forget.

Now 93, Brucewas just 18 when landed on the shores ofNormandy as part of the D-Day invasion of occupied France.

"I'll never forget that, of course, the sight, because I've never seen anything like that before in my life," he said.

Bruce hopes people have learned since then that war isn't the way to resolve conflicts.

"I hope we got enough smart people, people who are smart enough to be able to talk about it instead of going straight and fighting," he said.

More than 24,000Canadian troops took part in D-Day.

It's recognized as the first step in liberating Europe from Nazi Germany, marking the end of the Second World War.
