Winnipeg's 7th homicide investigated

A 19-year-old man died in hospital Tuesday morning after being found injured near a Winnipeg apartment complex.

The death of Jordan McIvor is being investigated as the city's seventh homicide of 2010.

McIvor's family said he was from the community of Sandy Bay, a reserve northwest of Winnipeg.

Police were called to the 1500 block of Notre Dame Avenue, in the city's Weston neighbourhood,around 2:30 a.m.

McIvor, who hada three-year-oldson,was found in a courtyard between two apartment buildings.

The area has been taped off by police and evidence markers have been placed in several locations.

Commotion

Jason KingtoldCBC News he that he was in the areavisiting friends when he heard a woman screamingfrom the back lane around 2:30 a.m.

"She was screaming very loudly. I'm sure everybody in this building heard it."

King said he saw the woman hovering over a motionless man.

Another mansaid he ran outside to see what was going on.

He said he saw McIvor with a puncture wound in his chest. Besidehim, a woman was sobbing, holdinga cellphone.

"I saw her sitting beside someone who was... on the ground," he said."I just went to see if he was alive...and he was dead."

Relatives mourn together

McIvor's relatives areheading to Sandy Bay First Nationto mourn together, said hisaunt Alaya McIvor.

"We are a tight family and we stick together. When someone gets hurt we all get hurt," she said.

"That's just the way we are. All we can do is pray and pick ourselves up as a whole."

Alaya saidher nephew was not a violent person, so it is particularly tragic how he died.

The family will remember him for his happy nature, she added.

"It's rare you'd see him with a frown on his face. You'd always see him smiling with his big white teeth," Alaya said.

No arrests have been made.
