U.S. election: Winnipeggers stunned by Trump presidential win

If the results of last night's U.S. presidential election rendered you speechless or confused, you're not alone.

A stream of sleepy-eyed Winnipeggerscarried their coffees from the Starbucks atOsborne Street and River Avenue Wednesday morning, still processing the reality of a Donald Trump presidency.

Stephanie Chartrand thought the U.S. would elect its first female president with a Hillary Clinton win. She was a little speechless to see that wasn't the case.

"What's the word I am looking for here. He's not fit to be president! I'm just waiting to see how long it will take for him to be impeached," Chartrand said.

Trump defied the polls and many predictions from prominent political analysts. The celebrity businessman ended eight years of governance under the Democrats, winning the state-by-state electoral college vote despite narrowly losing the popular vote to Clinton.

Sarah Naismith, 26, packed it in for the night well before final results were announced, knowing it was still a tight race.

"I went to bed around 10 p.m. thinking Hillary still had a chance. Woke up this morning seeing that she lost,"she said.

"I'm upset because Trump to me brought up a lot of racism and sexism and a lot of hate, so for him to win the election, kind of in a landslide, is pretty shocking."

Jeff Myall watched the U.S. election coverage into the wee hours but went to sleep when the numbers indicated a Trump victory was all but inevitable.

Witnessing the globalfinancial markets go haywire as results poured in, Myall said he was left wondering how currencies the world over might rebound or stabilize in the coming days.

"It's kind of unsettling to know what the future might hold,"he said, adding Trump's stance on several human rights issuesworries him.

Myall said fear and prejudice helped unite the Trump base and led to the outcome last night.

"The fact that he was so xenophobic, transphobic, homophobic, just everythingwas unsettling and that fact that America voted for that shows that the U.S. has large issues right now."

But not everyone in Winnipeg is unhappy with Trump taking over the White House.

Peta Sesewas "very happy" to seethe Apprentice host beat his female competitor.

"Rights [are] given to the women all over the world. [It's]getting out of proportion, and with Hillary becoming president, as a woman, could've corrupted a lot of people in the west," saidSese."I am happy that the men are still ruling. Men should be able to rule. Men are designed to rule, not women."

Kenn White said as a Canadian and Democrat he was disappointed by Clinton's loss.

"But at the same time, democracy has spoken; democracy obviously works," he said. "The voice of America has spoken.We'll see what happens."
