Police surround Subway restaurant near University of Winnipeg as theft in progress

A man is under arrest after he caused an uproar and locked himself and staff inside a Subway restaurant across the street from the University of Winnipeg.

Officers stay outside, peering through windows and blocking exits

A man causedan uproar and lockedhimself and staff inside a Subway restaurant across the street from the University of Winnipeg on Tuesday, police say.

As many as a dozen officers stood outsidethe restaurant, peering in windows, and thecrisis negotiations unit arrived to help resolve the situationafter police were called around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Subway staff told aCBCreporter that a man, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, entered the restaurant at Portage Avenue and BalmoralStreet and became agitated.

He locked the doors with everyone insideand then let staff leave by the back door, they said.

Officers had the restaurant surrounded for more than an hour, putting up police tape around the Portage and Balmoral intersection.

A man in handcuffs was seen in the back of an ambulance.

Staff said it appears the man trashed the restaurant's office while inside.

Officers pulled the tape down at about 11:30 a.m. but remained at the scene until shortly before noon.
