Police watchdog investigating after Winnipeg officer shoots man in Point Douglas

Manitoba's police watchdog is investigating after Winnipeg policeTasered and shot a man in Point Douglas on Tuesday.

Police were executing a search warrant on Barber Street at about 8:15 a.m., when they were allowed into a home,according to a news release by the Independent Investigation Unit on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers encountered a man with a knife inside, according to police, and one officer fired his Taser at him.

The man took off on foot, but police found him on Hallet Street. Police say they directed the man to drop the knife, and an officer then shot the man,the IIU states.

The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition.His condition was later upgraded to stable.

Police tape surrounded a Barber Street backyardon the Prince Edward Street side between Rover and Euclid avenues. Two police cars were at the scene.

Additional police tape was seen three blocks over in the back lane of Hallet, but police wouldn't confirm any connection to the Barber Street scene.

The IIU, which investigates all shootings and serious incidents involving Manitoba police officers, has taken over the investigation.
