Winnipeg to begin search for new police chief

The City of Winnipeg is starting to search for a new police chief to replace Danny Smyth, who's expected to leave the Winnipeg Police Service next year.

On Friday, the Winnipeg Police Board will consider a motion to form a recruitment committee to select a person to replace Smyth, who has served in that position for the past seven years.

His most recent contract expired on Nov. 30 but has been verbally extended for six months, according to police board chair Markus Chambers (St. Norbert-Seine River).

Smyth is now slated to leave the position on May 30, Chambers said.

The police service previously suggested Smyth would stay on in order to complete his term as president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. That term expires in July.
