The Winnipeg police boardis looking for the public to weigh in on who should lead the Winnipeg police.

A national recruitment campaign isunderway now to replace outgoing chief Devon Clunis who announced his retirement in March.

The Winnipeg Police Board has assembled a committee to oversee the hiring of the next police chief, a police board news release said Tuesday.

"We are asking the community to weigh in on the qualities the next chief of police will need to be an effective leader and live up to the community's needs and expectations," saidCoun. Scott Gillingham, chair of the police board,in the release.

To submit ideas about who should lead Winnipeg police, the board is asking people toemail wpb@winnipeg.ca. Written comments will be accepted untilMay 13, 2016.

Members of the public can also submit ideas when the police board meets May 9.

Devon Clunis continues on as chief of police until July 9.
