What to know about The Pas-Kameesak riding for Manitoba's 2023 election

Northwest Manitoba's The Pas-Kameesak riding got its current name in the 2018 riding redistribution, after the riding of The Pas gained a large section of the former Interlake riding (now called Interlake-Gimli) and part of the Swan River riding.

Its total population is 20,700, according to Elections Manitoba's 2023 riding profile,based on the 2021 census information collected in the province.

The border between Manitoba and Saskatchewan forms part of the riding's western boundary, and Lake Winnipeg forms most of its eastern limit. Highways 60 and 6, respectively, make up parts of the southern and western boundaries.

The riding includes its namesake, the city of The Pas, as well as Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Grand Rapids, Easterville, Pinaymootang First Nation, Peguis First Nation, Lake St. Martin First Nation and Little Saskatchewan First Nation.

The Pas-Kameesak's median age is 30.6, according to the 2023 riding profile prepared by the Manitoba Bureau of Statistics, based on information from the 2021 census considerably younger than the provincial median age of 38.4.

Voting history

The riding has been an NDP stronghold for 50 years.

In 2011, its voters elected NDP candidate Frank Whitehead, who won 73 per cent of just over 4,000 votes cast. NDP candidate Amanda Lathlin succeeded Whitehead when she was elected in 2016 with 43 per cent of the vote. She was re-elected in 2019 with 58 per cent of the vote.

  • 1958, 1959, 1962, 1966 elections: Progressive Conservative.
  • 1969 onwards (13 general elections): NDP.
  • 2011 election: Frank Whitehead (NDP).
  • 2016 and2019: Amanda Lathlin (NDP).

Meet the candidates

The nominated candidates for the 2023 election, as of Sept. 2, are:

  • Amanda Lathlin (NDP incumbent).
  • Alan McLauchlan (Progressive Conservative).
  • Alvina Rundle (Manitoba Liberal Party).

Candidates become official when they meet criteria set out in the province's Elections Act, including providing a statement of disclosure, after the election has been called. In The Pas-Kameesak, all three candidates are official.
