The Maples became a riding in Manitoba's 1990 provincial general election, though its boundaries changed significantly in 2018 thanks to booming growth that brought its population well above the target for a riding.

There are now about 24,500 people living in the northwest Winnipeg riding, according to Elections Manitoba's riding profile, based on the 2021 census information collected in the province.

The Maples riding includes the Lord Selkirk, West Kildonan, Mandalay West and Amber Trails neighbourhoods. It runs between Mollard Road in the north and Jefferson Avenue and Adsum Drive in the south. On its eastern side, the boundaries are Pipeline Road, Leila Avenue and McPhillips Street. It extends to city limits in the west.

The riding's median age is 35.2, according to2023 riding profile, based on information from the 2021 census, slightly younger than the provincial median age of 38.4.

Voting history

In the first elections following its creation, The Maples riding elected Liberal MLAs, but has since voted NDP. That included electing Mohinder Saran in 2011 and 2016 (with about 52 per cent and 36 per cent of the vote, respectively). In 2019, the NDP's Mintu Sandhu was elected with just under 2,800 of over 7,100 votes (about 39 per cent of the ballots cast).

Meet the candidates

The nominated candidates for the 2023 election, as of Sept. 2, are:

• Eddie Calisto-Tavares (Manitoba Liberal Party).
• Sumit Chawla (Progressive Conservatives).
• Mintu Sandhu (NDP).

Candidates become official when they meet criteria set out in the province's Elections Act, including providing a statement of disclosure, after the election has been called. In The Maples, all three candidates are official.
