What to know about the St. Vital riding for Manitoba's 2023 election

The south-central Winnipeg riding of St. Vital has been around since 1958, flipping between the Progressive Conservatives and NDP throughout its history (with the exception of the 1988 election, when the riding voted Liberal).

The south-central Winnipeg riding of St. Vital has been around since 1958, flipping between the Progressive Conservatives and NDP throughout its history (with the exception of the 1988 election, when the riding voted Liberal).

Its boundaries changed significantly during the 2018 riding redistribution, when the riding expanded to include almost half of the northern part of the Riel riding to the west.

The St. Vital riding now runs between Abinojii Mikanah (formerly Bishop Grandin Boulevard) to the south and the Red River, St. Mary's Road and Fermor Avenue to the north. Its eastern boundary runs along the Seine River, while its western boundary runs along the Red River.

The riding includes the Winnipeg neighbourhoods of Kingston Crescent, Norberry, Worthington, Victoria Crescent and Pulberry.

Its population is 22,825 with a median age of 40, which is slightly older than the provincial median age of 38.4, according to Elections Manitoba'sriding profile (which is based on 2021 census data). The median household income is $65,000, the riding profile says.

The nominated candidates for the 2023 election, as of Sept. 2, are:

  • Saima Aziz (Progressive Conservative).
  • Peter Bastians (Liberal).
  • Jamie Moses (NDP incumbent).

Candidates become official when they meet criteria set out in the province's Elections Act, including providing a statement of disclosure, after the election has been called. In St. Vital, all three candidates are official.
