The north Winnipeg riding of St. Johns has existed since 1958.

The riding's northern boundary is Leila Avenue from the CPR Winnipeg Beach rail line to Scotia Street. Its eastern boundary runs along the Red River to Redwood Avenue, where the boundary then runs west to Main Street.

It runs north on Main to Church Avenue, where the St. Johns boundary then runs west to Arlington Street.

The riding includes part of the St. Johns neighbourhood, as well as the Seven Oaks, Luxton and Jefferson neighbourhoods.

Its population is 21,700, according to Elections Manitoba's 2023 riding profile (compiled using data from the 2016 census).

The median age of the riding is 38, according to the riding profile, roughly on par with the provincial median of 38.4. The median household income in the area is $72,500, according to 2021 census data.

Voting history

The riding has been NDP for nearly 60 years. Before that, it was represented by the precursor to the NDP, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.

It was held by longtime NDP MLA Gord Mackintosh from 1993 until 2016. In 2016, incumbent Nahanni Fontaine won the seat for the party. She was re-elected in 2019.

The nominated candidates for the 2023 election, as of Sept. 6, are:

• Patrick Allard (Independent).
• Nahanni Fontaine (NDP incumbent).
• Teddy Rubenstein (Progressive Conservative).
• Dennis Yaeger (Liberal).

Candidates become official when they meet criteria set out in the province's Elections Act, including providing a statement of disclosure after the election has been called.In St. Johns, all candidates are official.
