Vacant house catches fire in Winnipeg's St. Matthews neighbourhood

A vacant house on Toronto Street in Winnipeg caught fire early Saturday morning.

A vacant house on Toronto Street in Winnipeg caught fire early Saturday morning.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews arrivedat the single-storey homebetween St. Matthews and Portage avenues at 5:22 a.m., the city said in a news release.

Firefighters found smoke coming from the home when they arrived. The city said they had the flames under control just after 6 a.m.

Residents from two houses next to the home evacuated to a Winnipeg Transit bus for shelter until they were able to return home.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
