The Winnipeg Blue Bombersare going back to their roots, adopting a solid W as their new logo.

The club revealedits redesign on Tuesday, dumping the oft-maligned lightning bolt that has been used since 1995.

"Entering their 83rd season, the Blue Bombers' new logo continues to honour the proud history of the Blue and Gold and all the players that have worn the W over the years," Jerry Maslowsky, the club's vice president of marketing, told reporters.

"Since the early 1960s, the Blue Bombers have been recognized by the bold block W logo on their helmets. Winning Grey Cups in 1962, 1984, 1988 and 1990 with this logo, the team is returning to this helmet design with a few minor updates."

One of those updates is the blue trim around the W. The old trim was royal blue, while the new is navy blue, according to Bomber brass.

Tradition, not superstition

Maslowsky stressed that the Bombers did not ditch the lightning bolt just because the team has never won a Grey Cup while wearing it.

"I don't know if it's as much superstition as it is the tradition," he said.

"Our current players, every time that they were putting on that W on that retro jersey, there was just something a little bit extra that brought that tradition and pride with them as well."

The new logo will be the centerpiece of every helmet and "will allow fans of all generations to continue to connect with the historic brand while paying homage to the past and looking forward to the future," said Maslowsky.

"What we've seen in the past is that W, when people see itthat is truly the Winnipeg Blue Bombers," he said.

The Bombers, along with every otherCFL team, will also be unveiling new home and away jerseys on May 1.

Meanwhile, Bomber brass are not saying when construction of the team's new stadium will be completed, but fans may end up watching the first games of the upcoming season at anotherretro icon Canad Inns Stadium.

Construction workers at Investors Group Field, the new stadium, told CBC News it may not be completed until the end of August.
