Winnipeg's less fortunate get new dos at Haircuts for the Homeless

Homeless people in Winnipeg were able to get a little off the top at a free haircut event Sunday.

LighthouseMission and Snippets of Love teamed up topamper the city's less fortunate for a day.

"In my heart, I just really wanted to be with Winnipeg's homeless," Brenda Lee said."I wanted to bless them in a way that they don't get everyday. I wanted to give them a haircut to make them feel like I do when I get a haircut."

Lee started Snippets of Love after her cousin was diagnosed with cancer. She cut all of her own hair off as an act of support for her cousin, Leesaid.

Homeless people in Winnipeg were able to get a little off the top Sunday at a free haircut event organized by Lighthouse Mission.

Many in the homeless community can't always afford to pay for haircuts, which is another reason that motivated Lee to reach out to colleagues in her industry to volunteer their time for a good cause.

"The first two ladies, she was just so excited about getting a haircut. She said, 'I've been waiting for this, I heard you on the radio.' She was just bubbling. And another girl said, 'I want this for a school picture.' You want that picture to look really good, and we're giving that to her."

Heidi Janzen was one of12hair stylists whooffered their time and services to give dozens new dos at the event Sunday.

"Everyone should feel that they look their ultimate best, and I think it all starts with the hair," Janzen, co-owner of Shear Bliss Salon in Morden, Man., told CBC News.

"I'm thankful for what she's doing," said Corey Craig, who had his hair cut by Janzen Sunday. "Now I feel like a million bucks."

Kits with shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving cream and other toiletries were also handed out at the event.
