A giant hole, big enough to swallow or severely damage a car, has blocked off part of Sherburn Street in Winnipeg.

The sinkhole was caused by a failed lead pipe, a City of Winnipeg spokesperson said in an email to CBC News.

The hole, surrounded by caution tape and mesh fencing, is just north of busy Portage Avenue.

It is expected to be fixed on Monday, the spokesperson said.
