Man shot by Manitoba RCMP taken to hospital in stable condition

A 23-year-old man was shot by RCMP ina rural Manitoba municipality Wednesdaynight, after police say he assaulted a woman and attempted to light several cars on fire.

A 23-year-old man was shot by RCMPina rural Manitoba municipality Wednesdaynight, after police say he assaulted a woman and attempted to light several cars on fire.

RCMP were called with a report of an assault and disturbance at a residencein the rural municipality of Macdonald, just southwest of Winnipeg,shortly after 9 p.m.,a Thursday news release said.

Officers who arrived were confronted by a23-year-old man armed with what police described as an edged weapon.

A confrontation followed, during which one of the officers shot the 23-year-old.

He was given medical treatment by police andtaken to hospital by ambulance in stable condition. He has since been released into police custody where he remains, RCMP said.

No other injuries were reported.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba,which is mandated to look into all serious incidents involving police in the province, has taken over the investigation, RCMP said.
