Police divers find body in Winnipeg creek

Police divers found a body in Winnipeg's swollen Sturgeon Creek on Wednesday, a day aftera manreported ateenage boy had fallen into the fast-moving water.

Police said in a release that they found a male body in the creek at about 3 p.m. and that further information would be released when it becomes available.

Witnesses told CBC Newsthey saw a boy 16 years old or 17 years old struggling in the water near the Woodhaven Bridge on Tuesday.

No one could rescue him, and minutes later he was seen face down in the water.

Two water rescue boats were sent to the creekon Tuesday afternoon in the area of Portage Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard while other search teams used poles to comb the shoreline. The dive team took up the search Wednesday.

Police previously said they had recovered a back pack and a few other belongings, but had not identified the owner of those things. They also weren't entirely sure that anybody had fallen into the water in the west Winnipeg neighbourhood.

No missing person's report had been filed, police saidWednesday. Police would not say whether the body is that of the missing teen. The teen's identity has not been released.

Police are warning all Winnipeggers about strong currents and subzero temperatures in rivers and creeks this time of year.
