Firefighters extinguisheda minor fire in an apartment building in Winnipeg but played a big role in saving a cat.

The fire broke out around 1 p.m. in a single suite of the building on Main Street and Jarvis Avenue.

A man who lived in the suite wastreated for smoke inhalation, but he was more concerned about his pet, which was also having breathing problems.

Before going into the ambulance, he tried to comfort the cat, which was lying in the arms of a firefighter.

A second cat also escaped the fire but ran off before firefighters could corral it and checkwhether it needed any treatment.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire or how much damage was done to the apartment.
