Citronella candles and bug spray are becoming staples for Winnipeg barbecues again as nuisance mosquitoes start to make their presence known.

City trap counts show the number of nuisance mosquitoes is swelling.

As of Tuesday afternoon, some trap counts were over 200 in the northeast and southwest areas of the city. The city-wide trap average is 78.

The spring and summer adult mosquito species are around in moderate to high numbers, according to the city's website, and the temperatures are favourable for larval development.

The scale the city uses to decide whether to spray for adult mosquitoes is still medium. It needs to be high before the city begins fogging.
