Microbiology director leaves post at Winnipeg lab

The head of Canada's National Microbiology Lab has left his post.

Dr. Frank Plummer ended a 14-year stint at Canada's National Microbiology Lab located in Winnipeg

Dr. Frank Plummer ended his 14-year tenure as head of the National Microbiology Laboratory in March. Plummer is one of the world's top HIV researchers, and in 2005 he was awarded a Grand Challenges Grant for $8.3 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to continue his work. The head of Canada's National Microbiology Lab has left his post.

Dr.Frank Plummer ended his 14-year award-winning career with theLevel 4 virology containment facilityin Winnipegat the end of March.

Deputy Chief Public Health Officer of CanadaDr. Gregory Taylorsaid Plummer will be greatly missed.

Taylor said Plummer, senior advisor to the Public Health Agency of Canada, will be involved in picking his successor.

"Dr. Plummer stepped down for personal reasons," said Taylor."Dr. Plummer has had an outstanding career in building the lab, and we are thrilled and delighted in the work he has done, but his life has changed and he is moving on."
