A treasure trove of historical postcards of Winnipeg is now available to the public.

The Martin Berman postcard collection, donated to the city by Berman's family,has been added toPastForward, the City of Winnipeg's digital cache ofpublic history.

Berman was an avid collector of historical Winnipeg postcards, amassing more than5,000 of them. The public library has scanned them all and is in the process ofaddingthem to thePastForward website where you can browse the collection.

Martin Berman family donated over 5,000 postcards from personal collection of Winnipeg and Manitoba postcards. Entire collection is now available online for public to see.

The physical collection has been sent for safekeeping to the city's archives and records control branch.

An officiallaunch of the collection with a discussion about the historical importance of postcards and the stories they tell will be hosted todayby Rob McInnes, owner of the McInnes postcard collection on PastForward, at the Millennium Library in theCarol Shields Auditorium, 11 a.m. until noon.

The collections on the PastForwardsite include city directories from 1880 to 1965 and over 1,500 images of Winnipeg. You can browse through history, look for familiar places or people, and add your own comments to enrich the site. All content onPastForwardis in the public domain and are available to download, print and share, the city says.
