Man convicted of animal cruelty

A Swan River man has been convicted of several animal cruelty charges after several animals were seized from his property.

A judgeslapped Walter Goba, 68,with a $1,683 fine but there could be more penalties on the way.

He also faces additional charges of animal cruelty laid by the RCMP under the Criminal Code.

Goba was initially charged under the Animal Care Act by the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer in February 2009 with 44 counts of animal abuse.

A total of 15 horses, two donkeys and 27 dogs were found starving, injured or living in filth, states a news release from the Manitoba government.

The fine levied this week relates to those charges.

The additional charges laid by the RCMP relate to animals seized from Goba's farm by the Rural Municipality of Swan River in December 2010.
