A Winnipeg man who allegedly tried to pass himself off as a high-ranking RCMP officer has been arrested, police said on Monday.

A Winnipeg man who allegedly tried to pass himself off as a high-ranking RCMP officer has been arrested, police said on Monday.

On Oct. 13, the 52-year-old went to a military veteran's legion in the bedroom community of East St. Paul north of Winnipeg, where he identified himself as the commander of the local RCMP detachment, according to police.

When he returned to the same legion on Friday, he was arrested and charged with two counts of impersonating a police officer, breach of probation and breaching bail conditions.

He was detained and was due to make a first court appearance on Monday, police said.

East St. Paul RCMP are advising the public that Thomas David Hanaway, who also goes by the name Tom Hanna, is not nor has ever been associated with the RCMP.
