Good Friday and Easter weekend in Winnipeg: What you need to know

Easter is upon us, meaning some Winnipeggers will get to enjoy a long weekend. Here's what you need to know about the coming days.

Transit and other city services

The City of Winnipeg will followits normal garbage and recycling pickup schedule on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Residents who want to know their collection days should check the city's water and waste website.

The Brady Road Landfill will be open throughout the weekend.

Winnipeg Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule on Good Friday and on a regular weekday schedule on Monday.

All leisure centres will be closed on Friday and Monday, as will all swimming pools except for the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. As well, the Pan Am Pool will be open Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Leisure centres and pools will be open on Saturday and Sunday, although all pools will close at 4 p.m. Sunday, the city said.

Libraries will be closed on Friday and Sunday. The Millennium, Charleswood, Henderson, Louis Riel, Pembina Trail, West End and West Kildonan libraries will be open 1-5 p.m. Monday.

All City of Winnipeg offices will be closed on Friday and Monday, but the city's 311 service line will still be available.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority office will be closed throughout the long weekend, but drivers canpay tickets online via the Parking Store's website.

What to do?

Most shopping malls, including Polo Park, St. Vital, Kildonan Place, Grant Park, Portage Place and cityplace, will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday but open Saturday and Monday.

The Forks Market will be open on Good Friday and Easter Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., its website says.

Families seeking long weekend activities can head to Assiniboine Park Zoo, which is offering zookeeper talks, an Easter egg hunt, a colouring contest and other activities starting on Good Friday.

Visitors can also say goodbye to Kamal, the zoo's last Asiatic lion, which will be transferred to the Chessington Zoo in Great Britain on Tuesday.

Spring snow

Showers and wet snow are in the forecast for parts of southern Manitoba starting Friday, saysCBC meteorologist JohnSauder.

The wet snow is expected to end by noon Friday, then skies should partially clear in the afternoon. Expect temperatures around 2 C during the day and 10 C overnight.
