Woman rescued after floating down Red River, holding onto log

A person was rescued on Tuesday after being spotted floating down the Red River, holding onto a log to stay afloat, say Winnipeg police.

Witnesses on scene told CBC the person was a young female child, approximately 10-years-old but police later corrected the reports and confirmed the rescuedperson was a22-year-oldfemale.

Emergency crews safely rescued the woman after being called to the scene nearKildonanDrive just before 2:30 p.m., police said.

Onlookers MichaelNapadyand Evan Peters ran along the shore to keep up with her.

They crossed over the Kildonan Settlers Bridge near the Chief Peguis Trail to try catch her on the east bank of the river.

"People were throwing stuff into the water from this side to try and catch her but they all missed her so we all rushed over,"Napady said.

Peters said he andNapady were ready to jump in and catch the woman before a citywater rescue crewpulledher from the water.

The woman was taken to hospital and is unharmed, said police.
