Freezing rain warning in place for central Manitoba as more snow coming for north

The national weather agency issued a freezing rain warning for parts of western Manitoba, including the City of Brandon and Riding Mountain National Park for Monday evening and overnight.

The national weather agency issued a freezing rain warning for parts of western Manitoba, including the City of Brandon and Riding Mountain National Park for Monday evening and overnight.

"Another major low pressure system is entering the province tonight, this time tracking farther north," CBC Manitoba meteorologist John Sauder said.

"With southern Manitoba on the warmer side of the low, there is a risk for extensive freezing rain in the southwest from Brandon north through Riding Mountain and into Dauphin and Swan River."

Highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery, Environment Canadawarns.

The freezing rain is expected to move out of theregion by Tuesday morning.

The warning covers the following areas:

  • Brandon, Neepawa,CarberryandTreherne.
  • Dauphin,Russell,RoblinandWinnipegosis.
  • MinnedosaandRiding Mountain National Park.
  • Swan River,Duck Mountain andPorcupine Provincial Forest.
  • VirdenandSouris.

Meanwhile, heavy snowfall is expected in parts of northern Manitoba, Environment Canada says in a snowfall warning.

"Those areas can expect 10 to 15 centimetresof snow by the end of Tuesday, and another 10 centimetresis possible by the end of Wednesday," Sauder said.

The following areas are under a snowfall warning:

  • Flin Flon,Cranberry Portage andSnow Lake.
  • Island Lake,Oxford House andGods Lake.
  • Norway House,Cross Lake andWabowden.
  • Poplar River.

In addition, an area including The Pas, Wanless, WestrayandClearwater Lake Provincial Park are under a winter storm warning with snowfall totals to be in the25 to 30 centimetre range by Tuesday evening.

Environment Canada is encouraging everybody affected by the severe weather to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Drivers should slow down in slippery conditions, watch for brake lights ahead and maintain a safe following distance.
