'This is a tragic incident': Teenage girl dead after stabbing in downtown Winnipeg

A teenage girl is dead after a stabbing in downtown Winnipeg Friday afternoon, Winnipeg police say.

"This is a tragic incidentthis is a teen girl who lost her life in this incident," Const. Claude Chancy saidat a Saturday afternoon news conference.

Policereceived a report around 1 p.m. Friday of the stabbing on the Graham Avenue near Fort Street. Police tape remained up around the Cargill Building, at 240 Graham, on Saturday.

Officers who responded Friday gave the girlemergency medical care and she was rushed to hospital, where she underwent surgery, police said at the news conference.

However, she died from her injuries.

Police did not release the victim's name or age, but said she was a youth in her teens.

Chancy saidthe Winnipeg Police Service is in the process of notifying the family.

Winnipeg police are looking for suspects after a teenage girl was fatally stabbed on a busy downtown street on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023. She was taken to hospital and received medical care but died from her injuries, police said the next day.

Officers are now looking for multiple suspects they believe were involved, he said.

"This is a busy thoroughfare for transit. There was a lot of people around," he said. "A lot of people werethere and had witnessedthe incident."

No arrests have been made yet and the homicide unit is investigating.
