Dorothy Dykens, 89, identified as Winnipeg homicide victim

Dorothy Dykens has been identified as the 89-year-old woman found stabbed to death in her Winnipeg home on Sunday.

Dorothy Dykens has been identified as the 89-year-old woman found stabbed to death in her Winnipeg home on Sunday.

Police were called to the 400 block of Tremblay Street, in the city's St. Boniface neighbourhood, at 1:30 a.m.

Police said the caller, who appeared drunk,was arrested. Investigators then did a sweep of the area, which led them toDykens'nearby home, where her body was found.

They also found a critically injured dog.

Melissa Joyce Gabriel, 35,has beencharged with manslaughter, killing or injuring an animal and two counts of probation violation.

Investigators believeshe stabbed Dykens multiple times in the upper body sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning. After leaving thehome, Gabriel returned home and attacked her dog, police said.
