Sikhs and Hindus in Winnipeg are celebrating Diwali, one of the major holidays on the South Asian calendar.

Also known as the "festival of lights," Diwali takes place between mid-October and mid-November each year and is an official holiday in India.

The Winnipeg South Sikh Centre is expecting some 800 people at an event Tuesday night.

And on Saturday, a big Diwali party will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. It's open to the public and free of charge.
