City inspection delays hurt Winnipeg contractors

Dozens of Winnipeg contractors say delays in getting permits and inspections from the city is starting to hurt their business.

One contractor who spoke to the CBC News said he had to lay off his crew for a week because he couldn't get a project inspected.

The city admits there are unusual delayscaused by a shortage of inspectors.

Generally, the city requires a contractor or homeowner to take out a permit for most kinds of electrical, plumbing and structural repairs or renovations.

Contractors say the permit system is so sluggish at the moment, many simply avoid getting one.

Stan Dueck, whois with the city's property and development department, said the city is recruiting more inspectors to help deal with the backlog.
