City cancels Winnipeg mosquito fogging second day in a row

The ominous sound of urban mosquitoes will buzz on unabated Tuesday after the city announced it will not be fogging for the second night in a row due to cold weather.

City officials said it will be too cool tonight to fog with malathion.

Fogging is less effective in the cold because mosquitoes are less active in cold temperatures, the city said.

The city will not fog when temperatures are forecast to dip below 13 degrees Celsius and the low for Tuesday night is 12 degrees Celsius, according to CBC meteorologist John Sauder.

Fogging was put on hold Monday night due to concerns over cool temperatures. However,Sauder says the temperature at The Forks got down to 16 C, which is warmer than the threshold. The temperature at the James A. Richardson International Airport dropped below 13 C between 1 and 2 a.m. Monday.

The average adult mosquito trap count in Winnipeg Tuesday was 30.
