Choppers and boxcars: Peek into Journey to Churchill

One week from the opening of its Journey to Churchill exhibit, the Winnipeg zoo has released photos from inside the grand new feature.

One week from the opening of itsJourney to Churchill exhibit, the Winnipeg zoo has released photos from inside the grand new feature.

Staff have been working on finishing touches, includinginstallingaBell 206B helicopter in the replica Churchill town site section of the 10-acre exhibit.

"Helicopters are essential tools in the north. They are used to transport people to remote camps,survey areas and wildlife, and relocate polar bears," states a news release from the Assiniboine Park Conservancy.

"This section of the exhibit is designed toresemble the town of Churchill. Additional installations include an inukshuk, a CN boxcar andtracks, and replicas of Churchills famous welcome sign and weather station."

The four-hectare Journey to Churchill exhibit will feature polar bears, Arctic foxes, musk oxen, snowy owls and seals in expansive new habitats.

There will be underwater and above-ground viewing opportunities for the bears and seals, which will be separated by thick, clear plastic walls.

Other elements in the exhibit include an aurora borealis 360-degree theatre, a new restaurant, gift shop and children's play area.
